An organic boiled egg, what better way for your baby to begin to enjoy the good things in life, eaten with a sterling silver spoon? A sterling silver spoon is also part of this collection. Both are decorated with the moon and star design which is sure to amuse. Add a slice of fresh good quality bread and butter and this will really emphasize the importance of a good breakfast to start the day. Both these items make the perfect silver baby gift for a christening or baptism and are known to possess health benefits.
How it is made
A description of our manufacturing process is given by John Campbell. The spoon is blanked from a thick silver sheet and then the bowl area is cross rolled to reduce the thickness and enlarge that section. The blank is then placed into a top and bottom steel die and struck to press the pattern onto the handle. The bowl is then formed using a male and female punch and die. Next the "flash" (excess material) is removed from around the outside and the spoon is bent to its final shape.
Once complete, the spoon is transported to one of the UK Assay Offices for testing and hallmarking. In the case of JA Campbell, this is the London Assay Office, our closest. After a positive result from the laboratory, the hallmarks are burned into the surface of the metal using a laser. This process is one of the oldest forms of consumer protection originating in the 1400s.
Upon return to the silversmith's workshop the silver egg spoon is polished using 4 different grades of compound. It is then decorated with the Moon and Star motifs and finally packed into the unusual presentation box for dispatch.
