Both products are ideal as a silver baby gift for a christening, birthday or baptism.
How they are made
John Campbell describes the manufacturing process.
The egg cup itself is a one piece, 4 operations spinning and is formed on a spinning lathe by wrapping a silver disc around a preformed series of "chucks". The skill of the silversmith is stopping the once flat silver disc from buckling as it starts to become a hollow vessel.
The spoon is blanked from a thick silver sheet and then the bowl area is cross rolled to reduce the thickness and enlarge that section. The blank is then placed into a top and bottom steel die and struck to press the pattern onto the handle. The bowl is then formed using a male and female punch and die. Next the "flash" (excess material) is removed from around the outside and the spoon is bent to its final shape.
Once complete, the spoon & cup are transported to one of the UK Assay Offices for testing and hallmarking. In the case of JA Campbell, this is the London Assay Office, our closest. After a positive result from the laboratory, the hallmarks are burned into the surface of the metal using a laser. This process is one of the oldest forms of consumer protection originating in the 1400s.
Upon return to the silversmith's workshop both the silver egg cup & spoon are polished using 4 different grades of compound. They are then decorated with the Moon and Star motifs and finally packed into the unusual presentation boxes for dispatch.
